Should You Choose 80 GSM or 120 GSM Paper for Documents?

Choose paper weight by how the document will be read, carried, written on and handled rather than by GSM alone. Use Printify to plan the same.

Short answer

Choose paper by how the document will be read, written on and handled. An 80 GSM sheet is lighter per unit of area than a 120 GSM sheet, which matters when you carry many pages. GSM alone does not tell you the paper's thickness, opacity or finish, so compare the actual stock when those qualities matter. Printify keeps the document setup, delivery choices, and final total visible before checkout.

What does GSM mean?

GSM means grams per square metre: the mass of a square metre of paper. It describes weight relative to area, not the exact thickness of one sheet.

At the same size and count, 120 GSM paper has more paper mass than 80 GSM. That does not automatically mean a specific price or thickness difference.

When is lighter paper practical?

Lighter paper can suit everyday reading copies, working reports and large documents where stack size and carrying weight matter.

For long packs, readability and correct pagination may matter more than a heavier feel.

When might 120 GSM be useful?

Consider heavier paper when the sheet will be handled repeatedly, written on or used for a presentation-style document.

Confirm the actual stock and finish; GSM alone does not prove opacity, smoothness or suitability for every print process.

What should you confirm before choosing paper?

Confirm availability, final cost, compatibility with any finishing and the way the finished stack will be used.

If the page count is high, compare paper weight with binding and delivery timing together.

Check finishing compatibility

Paper choice and binding choice should be reviewed together for thicker packs.

Paper choice decision map

The right paper is tied to how the document will be handled, not only how premium it should feel.

Check 180 GSM: everyday reading copies and longer packs.
Check 2120 GSM: more handled pages, presentations and writing use cases.
Check 3Binding: thicker stock can change stack feel and finishing suitability.

Paper weight checklist

  • - Check document length and expected handling.
  • - Decide whether people will write on the pages.
  • - Confirm actual paper availability and finish.
  • - Check finishing compatibility for thicker stacks.
  • - Compare the complete order total, not only the paper choice.
